Zhelevo

Sign leading into Zhelevo

When Greece annexed Aegean Macedonia in 1913, they changed the names of Macedonian people, villages and landmarks to Greek in their attempts to eradicate any trace of Macedonia's existence. Zhelevo was renamed "Antartikon" and it became illegal to use the Macedonian language. The use of Macedonian names is still forbidden in Greece.
